Students are continuing to explore classical listening through The Santa Cruz Symphony listening kit in rooms 1 and 2. As a teacher I am impressed by the connections between what they are learning about in this classical music and history program and how it relates to their lives as well as the modern music they are hearing today.
In our beginning Ukulele class(Mr. Seffinger’s) we talked about the correlation between the music of King Kalakaua’s(1836-1891) and what was going on musically in other parts of the western world. King Kalakaua who was a classically trained musician(also known as the Merry Monarch) is the one who brought ukuleles into the limelight in western culture. He included the ukulele in his classical music ensembles at ‘Iolani Palace. Eventually he realized the ukulele was the key to reviving traditional Hawaiian music, chant, and culture. It was because of this love of this instrument that the ukulele is popularized around the world today. The students became aware that a classical musician, King Kalakaua was the one who could hear the potential for the ukulele.
